Everybody loves Barry Schmaltz. I mean everyone, absolutely everyone, is just nutso cuckoo over this guy...and I must admit, he is a huge talent. The way he can make up songs right on the spot like that, well, it's just amazing. It would take hours to listen to just his audio recordings, let alone look at all the videos he's made. It's just awesome. So instead of worrying about how best to develop this website for myself, I've been developing a website for Barry Schmaltz, and it's just so much better than my own. Oh well. Anyway, here's the link so you can check him out for yourself. But don't get hung up on the first page of introductions, or on the page with the guide to the website that he insisted we feature prominently - no, check out (Explore) his New Vamps first. These are almost brand new! Then, for a lark, just scroll down and listen to some of the audio recordings that can be heard by clicking on the bottom of the page. Amazing stuff! A pretentious mantle, to be sure, but the output speaks for itself: elegantly performed with a nonchalance born of long practice, this music ingratiates and delights the listener with subtle interplays of humor and expressions of genuine delight, not only apparent in the notes that are played, but more importantly, apparent in the spaces between the notes that are played - or not played - as well.Robin Radus Musictag:robinradus.com,2005:Post/31560822014-08-26T10:03:45-04:002014-08-26T10:03:45-04:00Coming Soon - It's Almost Like FlyingNow you can listen to some tracks from our upcoming release, "It's Almost Like Flying", featuring Gaku Takanashi on bass, John Romagnoli on drums and percussion, and Robin Radus on keyboards. The site will have a new look soon, and the emphasis will shift from recording to performing. A new album is in the works with John Romagnoli Gaku Takanashi, myself, and the transcendently transplendant Debbie Hayman on vocals. Oh, and if you want to hear the music on the main page, you now have to click on the songs to get them to play. I don't want to drown out the rare video now featured on the main page of myself and Cleve Douglass performing on Colin Huggins's piano in the park: he calls himself "the crazy piano guy" and has the press clippings and news features to substantiate that, but after having met him I don't think he's crazy at all. Quite the contrary. Look him up, because he's a true performance artist with an over-the-top dedication to his vision. Paradoxically, this is a recording I'm making and as the only listener in the studio, I'm the only audience. As a result, the recording sounds stiff and uncomfortable, sort of like how I feel as I listen to myself play instead of playing in a situation where I'm comfortable, wherein nobody seems to be listening at all. Probably, though, if I had discovered these tracks a few months ago, I might have made some different editing decisions. As it is, I have decided that sanity is a localized event and am no longer concerned with it. I like what comes out in the studio before it gets fixed. I wonder if drummer John Romagnoli will agree with my philosophy, since all the Monty Python-isms are his. And the lyrics on the bridge, "Our love is like the weather; it's better than forever" - that's his, too. I wish I'd come up with that; it's the best part of the song, I'm thinking.Robin Radus Musictag:robinradus.com,2005:Post/1206852011-10-29T04:40:00-04:002017-02-01T16:25:41-05:00Barry Schmaltz, REALLY on YouTubeWould you believe there's a Barry Schmaltz very similar to the character I created? Most of my musical escapades these days are live gigs with a variety of artists, including guitarist Lou Volpe and other musicians of note. Should I remove my Broad Ruins page? I have been thinking that this site should just be about music. Or is that too one-dimensional? Am I focused or shallow? Of course, they're still just sketches. "That Drum, That Drum" is based on an idea from Dave Gaskin. "Dubdubdub" features my debut on melodica, which is a wind instrument with a keyboard. No mouthpiece, though. It's probably easier to play with a mouthpiece. And the third entry I call either "Urban Sprawl" or "Crackton", not sure which. Enjoy!Robin Radus Musictag:robinradus.com,2005:Post/973562011-04-13T09:35:00-04:002017-02-01T15:46:22-05:00Just like yesterdayHere's another YouTube video on the same theme. Robin Radus Musictag:robinradus.com,2005:Post/957232011-03-25T05:20:00-04:002011-03-25T05:20:00-04:00The Perils and Pitfalls of an Impatient Synaesthete Here is a much better mix of A Moment Too Soon. Is it ironic that I posted "A Moment Too Soon" prematurely with a mix that doesn't blend very well? Why would I do that? I know I'm prone to rash impulses sometimes, and do tend occasionally to make snap decisions often resulting in unsatisfying consequences, but why would I rush an inferior mix? Actually, I think I know: after working and working on a song for untold hours at a stretch, my ear stops actually hearing what things sound like. What I end up doing is recording a variety of different mixes and then listening to them the next day in the car and hearing what I like best. But having been too close to the song for too long can make me decide which mix is best not on the basis of which one sounds best, but on the basis of which one feels best. As it turns out, that's not a good idea. I don't even realize I'm doing it until I've put the song down for a week or so and then listen to the track again. In my car, the version I posted the other day feels like biting into a nice warm piece of sponge cake: it's open and airy and the way the parts blend makes me experience that particular synaethetic response (which is heightened after I'm fatigued from so much close listening). But it sounds terrible. So I'm reposting this song with a more balanced mix, one which I originally selected as my prime candidate for the one I'd go with before I changed my mind after first hearing the sponge cake mix and impulsively posting it. Sponge cake mix - ha! That's silly. Also silly is how the title of this post sounds like the name of a concept album....

Robin Radus Musictag:robinradus.com,2005:Post/955752011-03-23T13:00:00-04:002011-03-23T13:00:00-04:00On Making Videos, and How Unlikely That May Be...I shot a lot of raw footage for a video to go along with "Moment" but apparently video editing is a massive undertaking. I've just made "You're Fried, But You're Perfect For Me" sound a bit better. And I also replaced "Down Pat," making it sound less in-your-face. I'll probably end up replacing every track, but I'll fix the most egregious mixes first. It's always my fervent hope for anyone who downloads anything and then sees that I've updated the track to please go ahead and download it again, hopefully deleting the previously downloaded track and never speaking of it again.
Happy Labor Day! I think the fake guitar parts are too loud now, but maybe that's just fine for this track. I got to put back some first-take licks, thanks to this amazing digital age we live in now, and its technology, specifically. Anyway, there it is. I've tried to lay the site out a little better and am frustrated at the inconsistency of the web host I am using. Pictures won't display and so forth. But I should be able to push out Petrified City for this weekend. One way or the other, we will all move forward. But these inefficiencies are a bother.

I just realized how bad the mix is of what I put up here yesterday. I'll have to redo it. Again. This album has been cursed since I started it, so long ago. I hope this doesn't become an overly optimistic excursion into futility. Stay tuned.
Robin Radus Musictag:robinradus.com,2005:Post/511772010-09-03T17:23:45-04:002010-09-03T17:23:45-04:00Mild incoherence and two tracksFriday, September 3, 2010
Ah, September! The ever-elusive month of not-Summer, not-Fall. Like September, the ever-elusive remix and subtlely enhanced Petrified City still crawls towards completion, some nineteen years late. So then, what's another week? Also, that's a terrible analogy; September isn't nineteen years late. Two more tracks appear in the Random Tracks section. I hope they sound better than this post. Robin Radus Musictag:robinradus.com,2005:Post/837832010-08-28T17:15:00-04:002010-08-28T17:15:00-04:00Two more on the Random Tracks pageSaturday, August 28, 2010
Two more tracks up on the Random Tracks as of today. Through headphones on my little netbook, it sounds ok. On the netbook speakers, though, it's like listening to music from the nothing that is the space deep within the stereo image. Not the best effect for a solid mix, but then again, Petrified City had technical problems. I won't list them; they're tedious. Robin Radus Musictag:robinradus.com,2005:Post/834152010-08-22T08:30:00-04:002010-08-22T08:30:00-04:00Thanks!Sunday, August 22, 2010
I've not done too much with the site this past week, largely because I've been playing live jazz and Caribbean music all over Long Island lately. But I thought I'd take a moment to acknowledge all those people who have visited this site and listened to the music, and express my appreciation for that. Listeners from far and wide seem to be visiting repeatedly, and that is extremely gratifying to me. (Special thanks to my fan[s?] in Milan!) Also, it seems that Space Radus and the MPD Jam Band has received a supportive comment on iTunes. No one seems to care much for the guestbook, though, so the clues are hard to unravel....

Over the next few weeks, many new recordings should make an appearance - a new live track with Dennis Bram may very well be recorded by next week; a new remix with extra vocal tracks is in the works for the upcoming re-release of Petrified City; and a new digital remix of the very first album I ever recorded will soon be featured here, in honor of its thirty year anniversary. Finally, I'm starting production of a new solo album, my first in several years; details will follow as the project develops.

So thanks for checking all this stuff out! Your interest fuels my inspiration.Robin Radus Musictag:robinradus.com,2005:Post/832012010-08-18T17:06:44-04:002010-08-18T17:06:44-04:00"Bricks and Birds" is now on the Albums pageWednesday, August 18, 2010
If anybody downloaded "I Wish I Could Begin Again" already, I apologize for the appalling sound quality. I posted that track without listening back to it in my car, which is actually how I determine what sounds decent enough for public consumption. Anyway, if you download that song from the Random Tracks page of this site NOW, it should sound much more reasonably balanced. Please delete any copies you may have made of the bad mix, for the benefit of all humanity (or at least my ego). I just mixed down a couple of songs from Apathy, the progressive and experimental studio band I was happy to be a part of from 1988 till 1996. There are five albums, so I picked out one of the first tracks and one of the last. More to come...Robin Radus Musictag:robinradus.com,2005:Post/826542010-08-09T09:15:00-04:002021-09-23T19:02:29-04:00A few adjustmentsMonday, August 9, 2010
Once again, the "News" section of the site seems superfluous in light of all the links all over the place. I wish I could conceptualize a streamlined design for this site. It seems that if a person doesn't want to download a song or an album, the music should still be able to be heard. On the other hand, what's the point of having downloads at all if everything can be heard on the site? Or would taking all the music off the site serve as an incentive for more people to download music? What is better for an audience...listening to the music here, or having the music, like for a portable MP3 player? I'm just going to offer both options until there's a reason to do otherwise. Feedback is always useful. I wonder: does anyone even read these manic little posts? More tracks are now featured on the Random Tracks section of this site. I'm really working on Bricks and Birds, but I'm snagged, so it's these tracks for now while I figure things out.Robin Radus Musictag:robinradus.com,2005:Post/823672010-08-03T15:35:00-04:002010-08-03T15:35:00-04:00"Passing Through" is up!Now you can download this mix that I'm sort of satisfied with, but not quite. It's the 1994 album "Passing Through" on a 1995 reissue. The problem is that the original masters are too degraded to use, so I have to resort to more creative solutions. This is my latest attempt. It sounds better through headphones than through computer speakers, of that I'm certain. On that count, you can be sure the (free) download is worth it.Robin Radus Musictag:robinradus.com,2005:Post/822872010-08-02T11:09:55-04:002010-08-02T11:09:55-04:00Back to itIt's taken forever to back up my files, but I quit about half way through, shortening the time considerably. So I'm back to it: working on a massive site update. I'm always tweaking things here and there, so don't be surprised if you see a song or two pop up in unexpected places. Robin Radus Musictag:robinradus.com,2005:Post/717992010-07-28T14:27:13-04:002010-07-28T14:27:13-04:00I'm still here. It's the summer, and the studio could be cooler. Also, I've been away. But soon I'll run out of excuses and will return to the mission of restoring all these hundreds and hundreds of recordings before deciding to put only a fraction of them here on this site. But ah, such a big fraction that will be! Anyway, stay tuned. I thank my fans from near and far for their patience. The music was recorded live at a wonderful spot called the Jazzberry Patch at the Classic Quiche Cafe in Teaneck, New Jersey from May 1, 2009. This was the first time we recorded using the Olympus linear PCM recorder, the LS-10. It sounds better than cassette tape does. (With Gaku Takanashi on bass, John Romagnoli on drums, and Robin Radus on piano.)

Robin Radus Musictag:robinradus.com,2005:Post/808452010-07-07T09:07:19-04:002010-07-07T09:07:19-04:00I forgot to include a track!Wednesday, July 7, 2010
I forgot to put our version of St. Thomas (track three) on the recent Dennis Bram Quartet album "Ah, the Carltun!" Please check out the page for a free download of the entire two set recording of favorite jazz standards, plus this extra track!Robin Radus Musictag:robinradus.com,2005:Post/807902010-07-06T06:21:21-04:002010-07-06T06:21:21-04:00New Album available on "The Dennis Bram Quartet" page! I snuck onto the grounds of the Carltun the other night to watch the spectacular fireworks display at Eisenhower Park, and I was inspired to remix one of the few recordings that still exist from this historic steady gig. So if you visit the Dennis Bram Quartet page, you can download, absolutely free, the album "Ah, The Carltun!" featuring the Dennis Bram Quintet with special guest Lou Volpe on guitar (hence the quintet; also, Dennis introduces us as a sextet for some mysterious reason). Anyway, please enjoy this rare and wonderful recording.Robin Radus Musictag:robinradus.com,2005:Post/804502010-06-29T08:31:18-04:002010-06-29T08:31:18-04:00New Track at "Download Free Classics" Go to the Download Free Classics page to check out "Small Doses" from the soon-to-be re-released 2003 album Space Radus and the MPD Jam Band.Robin Radus Musictag:robinradus.com,2005:Post/801742010-06-23T16:29:13-04:002010-06-23T16:29:13-04:00That extra touch... Now you can enjoy Space Radus and the MPD Jam Band and the song Thought Goals while you read posts like this. I seriously doubt anyone will stay for the entire eleven and a half or so minutes it lasts. I believe it will be the first fully completed recording of everything I've got coming up. In the meantime, you can listen to the classic recording of Butterfly, now on the classic 4-track recording page.Robin Radus Musictag:robinradus.com,2005:Post/799752010-06-20T10:12:43-04:002010-06-20T10:12:43-04:00Well, it's up and running... ...so feel free to spread the word about this site, anyone and everyone who might happen to stumble upon me here. I'll keep everyone (anyone?) updated regularly as I continue to add to this site. I was going to wait until the top of July to start, but I figure now's as good a time as any. I have changed the name again, noticing that this is also an unused option. This seems more appropriate, somehow.Robin Radus Musictag:robinradus.com,2005:Post/791272010-06-09T06:52:55-04:002010-06-09T06:52:55-04:00It's happening I'm not sure what "it" is, but the site is developing. I worked and worked and worked. No one could accuse me of being unproductive. Except maybe myself.Robin Radus Musictag:robinradus.com,2005:Post/770372010-05-27T13:13:36-04:002010-05-27T13:13:36-04:00May 27, 2010 Today I didn't go down there. Too many tapes. Maybe tomorrow.Robin Radus Music
